About C&j's Caribbean Cooking
Caribbean Restaurant in Birmingham
Stepping into C&J's Caribbean Cooking in Birmingham felt like a warm hug. The place is unpretentious, more about the food than fancy décor. It's clearly popular for takeout, with a steady stream of people picking up orders, but there’s also a small area for eating in if you want a quick bite. The photos online don’t really capture the bustling, friendly energy; you get a better sense of it when you're actually there.
Their menu is pretty classic Caribbean fare – oxtail, jerk chicken, curries, and plenty of sides like rice and peas. One photo shows a perfectly plated portion of jerk chicken, glistening and golden brown. I’ve heard the oxtail is a real winner, and based on the reviews, the portions are generous enough to share. I'd definitely recommend trying the goat curry, if it's available, as the reviews are mixed, I would say to try it yourself and have your own opinion on whether you enjoy it or not.
C&J's is the kind of place where you go for reliably good, hearty Caribbean food without any fuss. It's perfect for a casual weeknight meal or grabbing something quick before heading home. While the reviews are a little mixed – some rave about it, others have had less positive experiences – my gut feeling is that it's a place that's best for people who appreciate home-style cooking and don't mind a bit of a gamble with consistency.

I’ve bought oxtail and rice too many times to count now. The food is delicious and the portions are incredibly generous. I usually buy on justeat and the driver has been consistently polite and patient even when I was running late to come down. When I bought collection, the cook was so polite and kind. Favourite restaurant in Birmingham for sure!
Ordered pea soup and got a container of broth and about 10 red peas. Never seen anything so ridiculous. How do i order a large and only get 2 halves of a potato. It lacked flavour. This was disappointing and a waste of money. I'll stick to my usual Caribbean shop. Ordering here was a big mistake.
We found about c&j because of my sister in law she has ordered from c&j a few times before so maybe a one off. Don't get me wrong the meat was delicious but ended up getting food poisoning. Me and the other half ordered from here last night and we got the jerk chicken and pork with rice and steamed veg, mutton curry with rice, chicken wings and dumplings, I received jerk pork without chicken.. the meat was pretty damn good but the rice tasted like bad breath. I was up half the night throwing up everything that I had ate and still throwing up now. My other half was fine until she woke up this morning she felt like she was going to throw up.
The kitchen was messy and didn’t look clean. Clutter everywhere. I’m surprised they had 5 star food hygiene rating outside. The girl that served us didn’t want to be there. Her attitude wasn’t great. She didn’t even wash her hands before frying the plantain and didn’t drain the oil out. That was nasty. The man that heated up our jerk chicken scratched his head then touched our chicken with his bare hands. Also the rice didn’t smell fresh. I had a belly ache after. The festival was old and dry. The jerk chicken didn’t taste too bad.
Large jerk chicken (is large) flavour amazing could do with bit more spice although top bit of chicken was quite dry. 8/10 So good I'm going back tonight
